1929 Model A Sport Coupe to Cabriolet conversion

Great stuff, really like the idea of a flip down dash panel. Been awhile since we had pictures of a new build. Keep us posted.

Thanks gentlemen.

The car is almost ready to roll so these pics are from the archives...

Gas tank mounting.....

The rear of the 32 frame has been pie cut and this kicked the rear frame horns up to horizontal .

Doing this however also makes for a really sloping surface right in the area where we wanted to mount the Tanks Inc, universal gas tank. The solution was to fabricate a pair of gas tank supports that fit the contours of the upswept floor and still hold the tank securely.

The 'snakey' fuel filler tube is 'cause the anal local authorities won't allow for the tank filler to be in a closed trunk...

A couple more pics of the hood sides install. They sit on two pins on the bottom and are fastened with two 8-32 countersunk screws into the ½'' x 1'' tubes that run from the cowl to the rad shroud.

These tubes also will allow us to mount the hood mounting hinges and latch.

The hood sides story ties in with the hood mounting and hingeing. Initially we were going to make the hood lift and swing forward but no amount of McGyver'ing was going to get that to happen, thegeometry was just not going to work.

In the end we went with a side hingeing method and I proceeded to draw it up and begin plasma cutting the various components all made in-house. The hinge pins are 'pip' pins and can be removed easily to remove the hood.

The hood prop rod is 5/16'' steel rod that seats in an MGB rubber saddle when not in use. The other end is a 1/4'' rod end. It seats into a tidy little triangular plasma cut 1/8'' tab on the cowl seam.

Oil bath air filter can.

I always liked the look of Henry Richards' air filter on his 32 sedan that was featured in the Rodder's Journal (TRJ no. 58) and wanted to do something similar. I found out it is a '55 Pontiac 4bbl can so I found one on eBay and set about modifying to run a conventional air filter in it. This was done partially on the mill to cut out the base and put some radial windows in the floor of the can after it was gutted and on the plasma table making a couple sheet metal supports to hold the Fram element in the correct position to get the desired effect.

It's different, a little period and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out so all good. Only Henry and I have them that I'm aware of LOL.

Adapting an OEM style taper mount steering wheel to an IDIDIT Old School steering column (3 bolt Grant style flange)

The steering wheel's taper was measured carefully and an adaptor was spun on the lathe then mounted in the mill to cut the keyway for the OEM Ford Woodruff style key. The flange and tapered pin were tig welded together on both sides of the flange.

Once assembled on the steering column on the bench, measurements for the transition cup to be made could be taken. Starting with a piece of 6061 aluminum bar stock, the part was turned on our old South Bend lathe using a radius attachment to get the look we needed. The horn button will be on the dash, hey you can't have everything, right?

Steering column and transition cup then blasted and powder coated gloss black.

It's one of those things that everyone will see but no one will understand the effort and time it took to get it to look just right. It's the fun of hot rodding I think.

Really like the breather thing..I did something similar a few years back but I used 2 1960 6 cylinder breathers. I don’t have any milling machines or plasmas…just a hammer ..tin snips..mig..and some knuckle skin..
