I was sent a link to the Thornhill Cruisers’ (Thonrhill,Ontario) web site where I found this announcement:
“Thornhill, Ontario, October 11, 2012
The executive council of the Thornhill Cruisers Car Club Inc. are sorry to inform our participants, guests and members, that effective October 11, 2012, after 19 seasons, the operations of the club and the cruise night have been declared cancelled for the 2013 season and beyond. The mitigating factor has been the inability to reach an agreement with our landlords, the Bayview Glen Church, after six successful years of operation at that location. We wish to thank all those who as volunteers, participants, advertisers, sponsors and spectators, made the Monday night cruise the successful event that it was. The assets of the club will be liquidated , the proceeds from same, as well as the remaining operating capital, will be donated to selected charities to be determined in a reasonable period of time. The results of these disbursements will be published on our website before it goes dark.
Remember, for 19 years: It was worth the drive to Thornhill
The Thornhill Cruisers Car Club Inc.
N.H. [Nate]Salter
Executive Vice President”
This is sad news indeed. I would like to thank the Thornhill Cruisers for 19 great years. While we haven’t been able to be as active there as we once where, we (Judy & I) enjoyed many great Monday nights at the Thornhill cruise night over the course of those 19 years, met many great people and forged personal relationships that we maintain to this day.
Like a lot of groups and individuals in our hobby, they did great work at funding charitable causes/projects.
Despite their claim that it never rained on Monday nights (it did occasionally), it WAS worth the drive to Thornhill. Thanks for your efforts and for the memories.
Sad news for sure Frank. Thank you for posting this and for recognizing them. Holy cow, what am I going to do on the May long weekend Monday night!!
Thank you Thornhill cruisers.
Although the cruise is on life support it’s not dead yet. There is a move afoot to find a new location so if anyone in the Thornhill area knows of a place please let the club know.
maybe a change in venue will spark a change in leadership & there nose will come down to earth instead of in the air
I don’t know about the “leadership” in the slightest and really don’t care. Like Frank, I applaud the efforts of whoever was involved all those years in setting up that Monday event in all kinds of weather, etc.
I do know some of the regular club members who did assist with setup, gate control and the like and it’s tough to commit to that consistently.
Whatever the outcome, thank you for the first 19 years and that you Frank for recognizing these folks. You know only too well what toiling behind the scenes is all about.
Bruce;
I am very surprised at your comment. After 19 years of providing a top quality cruise night to all of those in the hobby and the public who wished to attend, and having raised over $200,000.00 for our charities, your comment is the first I have ever heard of that negative tone.
If there was something that concerned you, I or one of the volunteers would have welcomed the opportunity to address your concerns. I can only say that if you were unhappy because of the actions of me or the 30 volunteers who put on the weekly cruise, then I would have gladly given you back double what you paid to attend.
If I have learned anything in my 70 years, it is that it is very easy to criticize and condemn, but it takes a lot more intestinal fortitude to make something happen.
I also believe that in life, there are those who make things happen, there are those, who watch things hapopen. Then there are the greatest number of those who still don’t know what happened
Nate
my concerns were expressed a couple of times as I only attended once in a while Once on he phone & the man was very rude & abrupt, i just felt like there was a clique there & outsiders were tollerated but not always welcome
Seems harsh to disband a great club that does wonderful work over the loss of venue.
I have been attending this very enjoyable cruise since ’93 when they were at the John St. community centre. They lost that original venue and moved successfully 6 years ago.
What about asking the Canadian Tire store between Yonge and Bayview off Hwy 7 if they can host the cruisers?
One of the best organized, friendly cruises I’ve attended and I’ve been to quite a few over the years. Bruce, those guys and gals were very busy making it happen…cut them some slack. What-ever happens, thanks for past ‘great’ memories.
i’m sorry to hear this, i just took delivery of a concours condition 1970 deville convertible in memory of my late dad, from a collection in the states, i was looking forward to bringing it to the monday night events! as the owner and founder of Auto Vault Canada, i was ready to share in the thrill of owning a beatiful classic car, pls keep me posted…what about speaking to Mcdonalds Canada? in Phoenix Arizona, where i spend alot of time over the past 20 years, they have numerous very popular “car events” that take place in some of their locations, just a thought…the cdn tire idea on hwy 7 is also a super idea! best regards, gary c shapiro
I have attended Thornhill Cruisers for years. It is a great club, a large variety of car types and vintages and super people.
I have been told that the club will meet on Monday nights at the Canadian Tire parking lot on Hi Tech Ave. this season.
I will plan to be there and gladly pay the small annual dues to be part of the gathering of car buffs; exchanging ideas, tips and experiences.
