question: Hydroboost braking system

Hydraulic brake assist using the power steering pump, called hydroboost.

Currently I have a Corvette master cylinder with 7" dual diaphram booster.
But because I'm running a blower motor it robs the booster of vaccum,
I don't want to use a remote canister.

I'm looking to buy a used hydrobooster rather than an expensive aftermarket one, do the newer Corvettes run this system ? Or what can I use in it's place that'll accept the Corvette master cylinder ? I can make up my own stainless lines and used the stock equalizer block.

Darrell I mounted a remote Vacuum pump on the roadster, I would take a photo of it but there is a firewall behind the seat and a real problem to get to at.

Just check it out on the Comp Cams site www.compcams.com the unit I am using is a 5500 Electric Vacuum Pump Kit. Mate if I can fit it anyone can, just make sure when you tighten the bolts through the rubber you don't over tighten them because they brake real easy, I drilled the bolts out and fitted a bolt right through the rubber. Just type in vacuum pump in the search section and it will take you right to the correct section then click on 5500 pump I think it says.

All the best with it, John

I had an 86 chevy caprice wagon that had a Hydro-boost brake system on it with a small block motor-The car had a heavy duty package with dual batteries,etc-maybe that was GM's idea of a heavy duty brake system too!

I don't know how many of those cars used them-but that is a lead for the bone yard or NAPA

Darrell,if memory serves me correct GM MCs are the same mount pattern. As for the hydro boost,it's a good set up There was a slew of GM trucks produced with it,I'd be scouring the wreckimg yards and you just might score!

bullet i use one on the blown beaumont , cost around 500.00 and works way better than a vacume booster

Thanks John for the suggestion, but I think I'll go with the hydrobooster. Seems I can find a used one for relatively cheap and use my Corvette Master and stainless lines and fittings I have laying around.

Frank ( techhead ) sent me this list of vehicles with hydroboosters.

Good chance that was originally a diesel caprice. All of the cars with the 5.7 olds diesel as well as all of the GM diesel pickups ran hydroboost.

Not likely-I was the second owner-The first owner was our local fire dept-The Chief's car-I wonder if any cop cars/taxis had similar equipment. But the diesel cars would be another place to find that system

Bullet:DThe pix you have with the hydraboost in a C3 .I'm curious that it is using a master cylinder that is a disc drum type. The C3 is disc /disc. Also If I remember you are using a pump that is putting out around 1000 psi .I just wonder if it is enough pressure .

I don't know, I'll have to check that out.

I'm using a Billet Specialties Tru-Trac System that utilizes a Maval Mfg. steering pump. 3.5gpm @ 1200psi

Not sure what a Saginaw puts out.

Mustang Rack Fluid Pressure

Bullet,

You may considered this but are you aware of the pressure range your aftermarket TCI Mustang rack operates at. I ran into a problem where my GM pump was putting out 1200PSI and my MII rack operated at 700-800Psi. It made the steering VERY jumpy and erratic......unsafe at any speed! I've heard if you use a Hydroboost system you need to run a pressure reducing valve to lower the pump output to the rack.

bullet , as i was sitting on the throne of reading i found that summit sells the complete hydroboost system with fittings and hoses for a little over 500 clams
