Summer finally arrived during the last week of August. The
Roadmates held their breath all week hoping that the beautiful
weather would hold out until Saturday, September 4th. Well,
holding in all that hot air proved successful! The day of
our Corn roast turned out to be one of the nicest days of
the summer.
With 129 registered rods and somewhere around 300 people
in total attendance, we were soon joined by passersby interested
in looking at the rods and classics parked in the spacious
grounds of the club house property.
The rods started rolling in around 11am for the event that
unofficially starts at noon but really begins whenever you
arrive, no matter what time. Although not the largest event
of the summer by any means, this event is nonetheless anticipated
by many local rodders. With attendance from as far away
as London (thanks Rochie and Fast Elvis!) and Ottawa (Larry
Way), our web master Frank ‘Von Franko’ Colgoni
was appointed our official photographer.
For
the admission charge of $10 per car, you couldn’t
get a better meal within 100 miles of the GTA. All you can
eat fresh corn-on-the-cob and European Deli dawgs proved
to be popular amongst the rodders and rodderettes in attendance
(editor's note: my wife calls herself a roddess). The corn
lasted well into the evening hours but the same can’t
be said for the famous Roadmate’s Hot Dawgs. Over
400 of the big ones were consumed by 5pm.
This
year, the Roadmate’s are celebrating our 48th year
of being an active club. In anticipation of the 50th anniversary
in 2006, a committee has already been appointed to ensure
the invitation-only 50th Corn roast will be one that everyone
will remember. A registry book was available under the admission
tent so we can be sure to send each participant an invitation.
Attendance in 2006 will be limited to 150 cars so if you
want to be included in this milestone event, be sure to
send me your name and address. |
