In the quarterfinals, Gary Irving took care of Larry Sinke
but, unfortunately, Bruce Boland hurt his car and was eliminated.
In the Semis, Gary, who was right on with a well-prepared
car, eliminated Mike Swinarski. Bruce attempted a solo, demonstration,
pass but things still weren't working right for him. Things
were looking good for the Irving/lowdown Team for the finals.
However, when we arrived at their pit, there was a major
thrash going on. Tom VanDerGeld, proprietor of Lowdown Hot
Rods and team member, told me that they were going to have
to change five pistons. I thought it was going to be a bit
of a stretch to get this accomplished but he said "no
sweat". I'm not sure about the sweat but they did get
the car back together through what can only be described
as organized chaos. Despite the crush of racing fans and
with limited time, the team got the job done. It was obvious
that everyone knew exactly what their job was and took care
of it. They weren't going to be denied a win at home. With
little time to spare, they fired the car, made some adjustments
and off they went to the finals. We ran back to the stands.
