From A Canuck Point of View
LA Roadster Show
Pomona, California
June, 2003

Once again this year we headed off south to the annual LA Roadster Show in Pomona Ca, and again it was incredible, especially if you were a roadster owner!

Unlike last year when Jim McGowan and I drove our roadsters down, Jim couldn't make it this year, so another roadster pal named Dan Wilkins and myself joined Dan's friend Don Simmons from Ontario and headed for the show. Unfortunately we had to fly down this year cuz Dan couldn't take the time off work, but I assure you we'll be back to driving next year! It just wasn't the same!

Thursday night was "settling in time", which meant throwing your stuff in your room and heading down to the bar to meet everyone else! Friday turned out to be a day of cart racing, BBQing, beer drinking, and all round socializing (Editor's note: sounds tough) when Randy Howe invited the whole bunch of us out to his fantastic spread near Temecula where he also has his own full sized "slide track" for cart racing! Man, what a place, and what a hoot! Randy is one really cool guy who's main thought is for people to just have a good time!

Friday night was more "socializing" and hooking up with friends met in the past. Saturday brought the roadsters out in full force, and packed the swap meet which was one of the biggest I've ever seen! Man, if you couldn't find it there it didn't exist! It was REALLY hot all day which wasn't helped by the fact that the whole show was on pavement, but there were a lot of beer stalls and we all stored our beer coolers in Roy Brizio's big trailer where we had easy access to them! Roy had his usual big display of the top quality hot rods he's known for building, as well as the original Tom McMullen roadster and the recently completed Rod and Custom roadster - both built by the talented guys at Roy's shop in Frisco.

Saturday night was the big dinner at The Mineshaft (I think that's what the name was!?) and there were about 30 of us that swarmed the place! Sunday was the beginning of the wind down and gradually everyone left for home and we headed back to the hotel to relax and kickback before the flight home at 6:30 Monday morning! The one thing good about flying is that you leave there at 6:30 and you're home by 11:30 that morning, but I'm proud to say that I'm a "driver" and my roadster's a "driver" and hot rods are meant to be driven to shows - especially if you have a roadster and you're heading for a roadster show!

Jim and I have already started planning our road trip to Pomona next year, and you can bet our roadsters will be right in the middle of all the great people we've come to be friends with down there as they head down to the roadster show!

"Chase the white line!", to coin a phrase used by a hot rodder that loves to have a hoot!

Editor's note: I've seen this car - awesome

Standing in one of the many long lineups for a burger and who's standing right in
front of us but Jay Leno! When he saw who we were he wanted to have us on his
show that night, but we declined because we had beer to drink. NOT!

Me, Frank and Pam Brocco, and Jan and Dick DeVilbiss

Denny, Andy and Sue Brizio, and Sharyn and Cub Barnett

There were a LOT of really old cool hot rods in the swap meet area and in the
outside parking area, and a lot that looked "barn fresh"! This was one of them.
Talk about a lot of really cool ideas on these car.!

This is the "hospitality area" at Randy's cart track. Talk about equipped.
Fridges, BBQ's, full sized bleachers - just TOO cool!
