Does it ever fail? We have to be talking about the weather if we're
referring to a car event. We had one of the driest summers in decades
yet, the weekend of Canats, specifically the Friday evening and
overnight, southern Ontario was rocked with torrential downpours.
On
Saturday morning, in Markham where I live (north of Toronto), we
had fog so dense that you couldn't see the houses across the street
- weird for July. However, we did set out for Trenton, meeting up
with some others along the way and arriving in Trenton (a couple
of hours east of Toronto) to overcast skies. You could tell that
if the sun ever came out, it would be ugly as the air was heavy
with moisture and there were standing pools of water everywhere
suggesting that it had rained in Trenton also. In fact, we bumped
into someone we knew at the local coffee shop and found out that
it had rained very hard during the previous evening and overnight.
Proceeding
to the grounds, the evidence of the rain was everywhere. Some of
the grassy areas were literally under water other areas were
boggy. Definitely not ideal and it's likely that these conditions
and the rain hurt attendance that day. We don't have any attendance
figures but it appeared down from the previous year. The sun did
appear later in the morning and it did get ugly - hot and humid.
Having
said that, the organizers carrried on in exemplary fashion as usual.
They always deserve our thanks. And, there were lots of nice cars
to see and nice people to talk to. Worth mentioning is the long
distance awards to Zane Southgate who drove his '52 Henry J fom
Saskatchewan and Ken Patterson and his '51 Mercury from Florida.
